CACTUX
A Penn State Connection Manager for Linux

About

The goal of this project is to provide a graphical internet connection manager for Penn State students, faculty, staff and affiliates who are running Linux. CACTUX aims to require a minimal amount of configuration from the user in order to establish an Internet connection while also resembling the official Penn State Connection interface as closely as possible.

Requirements

The goal is to require as little from the user as possible. The only thing the CACTUX binary requires you to have installed is pppd and chat. Most users should probably already have these installed by default.

If you prefer to build from the source code instead, you will need to have have the X graphical development libraries (including libXpm) additionally installed.

Why CACTUX is suid root: Because CACTUX calls pppd to open the modem device, it needs root privileges. To do so, you could either run CACTUX as root, or run a suid-root binary. I'm concerned that if people do the former, they may accidently stay logged in as root after they launch CACTUX, and I'd like to discourage people using root as their default account.
